On this page you will find dozens of user friendly engines used in game creation. I've ranked them according to my expirience with them & first impression. Some engines look more intimidating then others. Rank is subject to change as I poor more hours into learning the program.

This little beauty can be used to create an online RPG (aka, MMORPG) all by itself. It has everything you could possibly need - and it's open source! If you find that Origins doesn't have everything you need then you can simply pop it open in Visual Basic 6.0 and get to work adding in your own exciting systems. homepage

First Impression:
There are very few dedicated mmorpg engines out there for casual game creation. This one looks flexible, but confusing at first. You have to create a login to start and password just to get started. With an import of your own graphics, you could create a nice looking & functional mmorpg. Version 2.0 adds many features.

First Impression:
I followed the tutorial and made my first game with this engine. It was surprisingly easy and even though the tutorial was made for a 1-player game, I turned it into two. When I tried to expirience outside of the tutorial, It took a couple hours to get anything new and different.

This engine has a clean interface and drag & drop elements. I'd reccomment it for commercial game production.


This is it--a game maker for creating action games that depend on fast reflexes! Unlike previous tools that were for one specific genre, this title lets you create games in many genres with action elements from platformers, action RPGs, and shooters. homepage

First Impression:
I got really excited about this one and dedicated an evening for checking it out. There are games and video downloads that show you just what it can do. The problem is, it's stinking hard! I eventually quit cause I got frustrated. You should note, that I don't program and am only good at simple algebra. Check it out, you might have better luck then me.

First Impression:
I spent 10 hours trying to make two health bars for a two player game. The rest of the game only took me only 1 hour. If you give enough "work" time into this engine, you can make just about anything. It gets easier and easier as you go. Now if only I could master external resource handling.


The graphical scripter within 001 Game Creator is a simple, yet powerful method of creating events for your game without the difficulty of learning to write code. It uses the simplicity of pointing and clicking to allow the user to easily implement events in the form of a flowchart. homepage

First Impression:
Engine001 had one of the best first impressions for me. For now, I'll give it 4 stars, because when I launched it, I said, "I can do this." It doesn't support a huge amount of gameplay types, but updates will come.


Flixel is an open source game-making library that is completely free for personal or commercial use. Written entirely in Actionscript 3, and designed to be used with free development tools, Flixel is easy to learn, extend and customize. homepage

First Impression:
Not the typical download-your-engine-and-start-making-a-game program. Haven't had a chance to expirment with Flixel, by first impressions were good.


FlashPunk is a free ActionScript 3 library designed for developing 2D Flash games. It provides you with a fast, clean framework to prototype and develop your games in. This means that most of the dirty work (timestep, animation, input, and collision to name a few) is already coded for you and ready to go, giving you more time and energy to concentrate on the design and testing of your game. homepage

First Impression:
Flashpunk makes game creating easier. I like that is focuses on 2D games, cause I'm all about 2D.


With RPG Maker VX you can create games with a resolution of 544x416, 32bit colours with a smooth, steady framerate of 60 fps. The ability to have characters run is now included as a standard function and the in-game default font has been changed from previous versions for easier reading homepage

First Impression:
I used rpg maker 2003 to create a 10 hour rpg game. It was my first game.and I never released it. I love rpg maker. I only give it 3 stars cause I don't feel this engine is good for commercial game development. I could be wrong though, I've seen some games released that look like they could have been made on this engine.

First Impression:
At first glace, Blitz does not impress me as being an engine of choice. It does offer an array of different version such as 2D & 3D, but I wonder if you'll be better with another engine that includes the two in a single package. Help me change my mind.

First Impression:
I've worked with programmers on several occasions and find XNA to be choice for developers. The limitation is developing on windows phone 7, xbox live, and pc. And...having basic programming skills.

First Impression:
I saw the day 1 release of this program and I have to say I'm really impressed. I don't know much about it except for the fact it's done very well for itself, and Star Wars the Old Republic used Unity to display the Galaxy Map on their site.

First Impression:
When I opened torqu for the first time the interface was clean and proffessional. It's not as easy to learn as game maker, but once you make something you have it forever. There are scripts you can drag and drop once they are made and plenty help on the internet.

First Impression:
I've downloaded Construct 2 and will have my deeper impressions posted later. So far it sounds very promissing, though there seems to be a limitation on the type of games you can make.


AGK was developed out of our own need to create a one stop solution for making game apps for mobile devices. In the past TGC had developed games for one device and then wanted to port them to other platforms. The process of conversion was costly and repetitive. The team wanted to spend more time creating new games and not burdened with laborious conversion work.

First Impression:
I've worked with Darkbasic and had trouble using it to create a tic-tac-toe game. This is an offset of that product. Once again it's my fault I can't learn these because of programming requirments.
